Nina Storey – "Shades"
(Red Lady Records)
One glance at Storey’s adorable face on the album cover might lead you to believe that the music contained therein would be nothing more than disposable bubble gum pop, Stacey Q reincarnated. But looks can be deceiving, very deceiving. Storey, in fact, owes more to the R&B, soul sounds of Lauren Hill and Macy Gray then she does the world of glamour pop.
"Shades", an independent release in every sense of the word, is a most impressive effort and Storey has one of the most full sounding and soulful voices in quite some time. Whether it’s the Stevie Wonder influenced, "Coffee and Margaritas", the piano based ballad "Crown", or the gospel richness of "Let Us Walk", Storey crafts them to perfection. This is a voice we shall hear from soon, and hopefully, very often.
